Explore the stories and legends surrounding the Sphinx and discover its role as a guardian of the Giza Plateau.

The Sphinx

Welcome to our exploration of the enigmatic Great Sphinx of Giza, an ancient marvel shrouded in mystery and steeped in history. This iconic monument, dating back to the era of King Khafre, reigns majestically in the heart of Egypt, captivating visitors with its timeless allure and symbolic significance. Join us as we delve into the secrets and symbolism of this legendary guardian of the pyramids.

The Great Sphinx:
The Sphinx is an Egyptian monument in the form of a statue with a lion's body and a human head. It guards tombs and temples. The Phoenicians and Greeks created statues resembling the Sphinx. However, they are winged and have the head of a woman. The Sphinx of Giza is the most famous.
The imposing reclining Great Sphinx in Giza, Egypt, dating back to the reign of King Khafre (the fourth king of the fourth dynasty, approximately 2575–2465 BCE), represents one of the earliest and most renowned artistic expressions.
It’s thought to be a depiction of the ruler himself; sphinxes have historically symbolized royalty throughout much of Egyptian civilization. However, among Arabs, the Great Sphinx of Giza is commonly translated to the "Father of Terror."

The Sphinx location:
Located on the Giza Plateau on the west side of the Nile in Giza, Egypt, the Sphinx is also a guardian of the plateau.
The Sphinx was probably cut from a rock before King Khafre thought to carve it into a figure. It faces east direction.

Myths about Sphinx:
Opinions vary on what the statue represents. The traditional view is that it depicts King Khafre, symbolizing the strength of a lion and the wisdom of a man. However, some archaeologists believe it was constructed by King Khufu, as the Sphinx's face resembles a statue of Khufu rather than Khafre. The question of who built the Sphinx remains a topic of debate.
Another Myth that the statue is thought to symbolize the sun god, as indicated by the temple facing it where religious ceremonies took place. Egyptians have long held this belief, viewing it as a depiction of Horus on the horizon, the prominent Egyptian deity representing the sun setting.

Loss of Sphinx Nose:

The statue had a long nose, but the statue lost its 1-meter-wide nose, and rumors still circulated that the nose was destroyed by Napoleon's artillery.
Other rumors accuse the British, the Mamluks, or others. But drawings made by the Danish explorer Frederik Louis Norden of the Sphinx in 1737 AD and published in 1755 AD in his book "The Journey to Egypt and Nubia" show the statue without a nose.
There are other explanations for this:
1. The sons of the pharaohs' kings used to compete in archery.
2. Erosion could be the cause.
3. The Sphinx is often described as lacking a nose.
However, all the theories agree that the main reason is that the nose was the weakest point of the Sphinx.

People from all over the world are fascinated by the Sphinx, which has become a lasting symbol of old Egyptian culture. Even though no one knows where it came from or what it's for, its majestic appearance on the Giza Plateau continues to amaze and awe people.
